THE
Philippine Biology Olympiad

The Philippine Biology Olympiad (PBO) is the country's premier biology competition for students of grades 7 to 12 and serves as the venue for selection of the country's representatives to the annual International
Biology Olympiad (IBO). The Department of Science and Technology - Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) has endorsed the Department of Biology of the Ateneo de Manila University and the Ateneo Biological Organization - eXplore. eXperience.
eXcel (BOx) as the official organizers of the PBO.
Known as the Ateneo BioCamp from 2012 to 2017, the competition has enabled students to participate in events such as seminars, forums, laboratory workshops, a quiz bee, and an amazing race. All of these activities aim to enhance
the students' interest, passion, and skills in the biological sciences; increase awareness on issues in biology, particularly biodiversity; and promote camaraderie among young biologists in the making. Now on its second year as the
Philippine Biology Olympiad, the event will again select the four best performing participants and will declare them as the OFFICIAL REPRESENTATIVES OF THE PHILIPPINES TO THE IBO.

What is Sisid?
SISID, the theme of PBO 2019, is the Filipino word for diving and going deep. It means exploring the unknown and reaching greater depth. Now that the Philippine Biology Olympiad has launched into the international scene on its first year, the competition aims to go deeper and explore greater potential this year. Sisid symbolizes taking risks, going to places where no one has gone before, and trying things that no one has tried– a concept very common in the scientific community, and a concept that the Philippine Biology Olympiad 2019 will be embracing.

Quiz Bee
This activity aims to test the participants’ knowledge and understanding of the concepts in biology through a competition that promotes teamwork, integrity, and academic intelligence. This competition will test the participants’ mastery of the topics not only through questions that would ask specific facts and concepts; but also through theoretical tasks that will require them to apply their understanding of the topics.

Laboratory Skills
The Laboratory Skills Competition is a three-round competition category that aims to test the laboratory skills of the students, and assess their capabilities to solve biological problems using the necessary skills. It will be one of the categories that will be the basis of being selected as a member of the team that will represent the Philippines in the International Biology Olympiad.

Breakout Sessions
This activity series aims to assemble the participants for independent group discussions and team-building dynamics in order to foster camaraderie among the like-minded student leaders of the Philippines. The teams, with their respective TnMs, will be randomly assigned into clusters of teams. The activities for the session may vary as it could involve the topics discussed by key speakers or the encompassing Philippine biodiversity and the theme of the current PBO.

Amazing Race
This activity aims to evaluate the participants’ grasp of biological skills and techniques, and their ability to solve biological problems. In addition, this competition will require teamwork, time management, and critical thinking. The Amazing Race will be awarded separately and will not affect the teams’ standing in the overall competition.
